Stephen Manley
Stephen has found through the saturation of the Word the message of the cross. It is beyond an event; it is a style. Thus, the cross is not a piece of wood or an emblem, but it is the heart of the person of Christ. Cross style is the Christ style. He must be central. As an international evangelist, he has taken this message to the world. Expositional preaching is cross cultural and meets the need on every level.

After pastoring for seven years, evangelism became his active call in 1968. He believes God has called him to evangelism training as well as teaching and preaching of the Word. He is committed to making Jesus and His cross known to a needy world.

SMEA

Stephen Manley, the primary founder of SMEA, was raised in the Methodist Church and began his pastoral ministry in the Union Chapel Methodist Church, Upland, IN, in 1960. He married Delphine Oliver, also raised in the Methodist Church, in the summer of 1961. They pastored Methodist churches from then until 1964 before leaving the Methodist Denomination for theological reasons.

The Country Church, an independent congregation outside of Bourbon, IN, called the Manleys to pastor there from September of 1964 until May of 1966, at which time they moved to the United Missionary Church of North Manchester, Indiana. this was their first experience in a holiness church and they pastored there for two years.

The call to full-time evangelism came clear in the Spring of 1968. In June of that year they gave up the pastorate at North Manchester but remained in the town. Not wanting to be a hindrance to the congregation's acceptance of the new pastor, the Manleys began attending the Church of the Nazarene. In September they attended their first Nazarene District function which was the welcoming of the new district superintendent, Dr. Fletcher Spruce. The door to the Church of the Nazarene was opened to them and within the next twelve months 75% of the meetings scheduled were in the Nazarene Denomination. In January of 1970 the Manleys moved their membership to the Church of the Nazarene and Stephen Manley was ordained in July of that same year.

Crusade Evangelism, Inc., was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization, in the state of Indiana, on August 29, 1967. Its purpose, as stated in the by-laws, was "to win the world for Jesus Christ."

For nine years the board of this organization was only active enough to satisfy the legal requirements. Elections were held by mail annually and the officers were basically family members.

In the late 70's, Stephen, motivated by a desire for accountability, wanted to bring the organization to a new level of activity. The ministry had grown to the point that additional supervision was needed. This came in the form of some very special men between 1976 and 1980: Jerry Duff, Wayne Penrod, Robert Chenoweth, and David Phillips.

In 1985, Rev. Michael Estep joined the staff as a consultant. Under his direction, in October of 1985, the name of the organization was changed from Crusade Evangelism, Inc., to Stephen Manley Evangelistic Association, Inc.

The expansion of the ministry of this organization has been startling. We just praise His name for how He continues to reveal Himself.
