The Faith Once Delivered: An Introduction to the Basics of the Christian Faith-An Exposition of the Westney Catechism

Paperback |English |1894400879 | 9781894400879
Overview

This practical book introduces the reader to the basics of the Christian faith through an explanation of the Westney Catechism. It grounds Christians in the essentials of the faith, examining the Great Commandment, the Apostles' Creed, the Ten Commandments, baptism, the Lord's Supper, the Lord's Prayer and the Great Commission. This is a useful book for small group studies, Christian schools, Sunday School, family devotions or simply as an introduction to the foundational doctrines of Christianity.

"Since the earliest days of the church, catechizing has been one of the primary means Christians have used to learn the truth they love. The most useful catechisms don't just provide questions and answers--they also explain the answers. The Faith Once Delivered...[is] an accessible, practical resource."

Donald S. Whitney, author of Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, Praying the Bible and Family Worship

"Here is a faithful exposition of the Apostles' Creed, presented in a catechism format, that is thoroughly biblical, theologically accurate and yet practically relevant. You will do well to explore the truths contained in these pages, internalize them into your daily life and pass them down to the next generation."

Steven J. Lawson, president, OnePassion Ministries, Dallas, Texas, USA

"This is a wonderful book to help the church equip new believers and those wanting to grow in their understanding of basic Christianity. ...an evangelical catechism that is both robust theologically and centred on the gospel. I would highly recommend this excellent tool to church leaders."

Editorial Reviews

In 2 Thessalonians 2:10 the Bible says that those "who are perishing" do so "because they refused to love the truth and so be saved." By contrast, those who are saved by Christ, that is, true Christians, are characterized as those who do love the truth of God. One of the greatest evidences of loving the truth is a lifelong, unquenchable desire to learn it. Since the earliest days of the church, catechizing has been one of the primary means Christians have used to learn the truth they love. The most useful catechisms don't just provide questions and answers--they also explain the answers. The Faith Once Delivered is one such catechism. It can be used with children or adults, in the home or in a group setting. Anyone who teaches it will find it an accessible, practical resource. Anyone who learns it will be blessed.

--Donald S. Whitney, Professor of Biblical Spirituality and Associate Dean for the School of Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY. Author of Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, Praying the Bible, and Family Worship

The idea of a Baptist catechism sounds strange to most Baptists, but that illustrates the pervasive ignorance of church history in our churches. In this very useful book, Craig Carter not only calls us back to catechesis, but also provides a catechism and its exposition to provide a way to do it. The people of God are more interested in thinking seriously about their faith than pastors often realize, and what is required is robust theology communicated in a form that is clear and engaging. Craig Carter has been doing that in his church, and this book is the fruit of that labour. I anticipate that I will use this in my church, and I commend it to others.

The Faith Once Delivered is a wonderful tool to help the church equip new believers and those wanting to grow in their understanding of basic Christianity. Craig has put together an evangelical catechism that is both robust theologically and centred on the gospel. In these days of growing biblical and theological ignorance, such a work is so needed for the equipping the body of Christ. It is uniquely both orthodox and missionally focused. I would highly recommend this excellent tool to church leaders.
