Overview
Title: Schuylkill's fire history lights up in new bookAuthor: Gerry UlicnyPublisher: Republican HeraldDate: 8/8/2010Local firefighters are the stuff of legend, but for a true account, look to the latest book by Schuylkill County residents Michael R. Glore and Michael J. Kitsock."Schuylkill County Firefighting" is the duo's third foray into the publishing world on their favorite subject. Kitsock and Glore are both lifelong firefighters and aficionados of firefighting history.A high-quality, glossy publication, the book was published as part of Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series. The two county natives have collaborated for years, but the first book they created together was, aptly, a history of Pottsville firefighting. From 2001 to 2004, they and numerous others they credit with assisting them worked to create that book. The goal then was simply to assemble something that would honor and commemorate firefighters throughout the county's history in time for the annual firefighters convention held in Pottsville in 2004.That proved to be just the beginning of a literary mission for the pair.A second book, "Reading Firefighting," followed soon after, again co-authored and with an introduction by Reading firefighter and historian William Rehr, with whom Glore has worked in his current profession as a City of Reading firefighter. That book was completed in late 2007, but plans for the Schuylkill County book were already in the works."We were approached by people, ever since the first book, to do a history of firefighting for the county," Kitsock said. "It is a unique history because of the fact that it is all volunteer, and of course much more than that, but it was something that was always there."Glore says the idea took shape over time, and the largest challenge was how to organize the large amount of material that comprises the book."Once we got the chapters figured out it all kind of fell into place," Glore said. While there is no denying that the historical research in the book is impeccable, it also contains incredible photos."That may have actually taken the most time and effort, the gathering and sifting through, and labeling thousands of pictures that were graciously provided for the book," Kitsock said.In the end, Kitsock and Glore let the publishers make the final call on which pictures were included in the book, and they are satisfied with the choices made."They are stunning, aren't they?" Kitsock said. "It's just really fulfilling for us and I think for many people who have been interested and contributed."All of the photos provided were given with full rights, although credit is given to the owners inside the book.It isn't surprising that these two men have devoted themselves to recording the history of firefighting. After all, they intend to be part of it.Kitsock, a Pottsville resident, grew up in Mahanoy Plane, where he was a junior firefighter by the age of 16. He was simply following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both members of American Hose Company No. 2, Gilberton."It made a profound impression on me growing up," Kitsock said.Glore was 18 when he joined Pottsville's Good Intent Fire Company. He still belongs to the Phoenix Fire Company of Pottsville.Another aspect of the work goes beyond the historical enjoyment, Glore said."This might be something that not everyone thinks of, but this could really be a resource as a training tool," Glore said. "When we look at the fires of the past and we see how they were handled we are also looking at what worked and what did not work. By studying the fires of the past we can better fight the fires of the future."Kitsock and Glore have said that the proceeds from the book will go to the Schuylkill Historical Fire Society and the Historical Society of Schuylkill County. Both were active in starting the Schuylkill Historical Fire Society in the former Columbia Hose & Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1 station at 105 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah. On Aug. 16, the society will officially open the museum. An open house starts at 6 p.m. at the site, which has seen numerous improvements, including more than $300,000 in building improvements and untold treasures in equipment and memorabilia. The book will also be sold, signed if desired, at a discount.
