Our Bishops, Heroes for the New Evangelization

Hardcover |English |1498284248 | 9781498284240
Overview

These are challenging times when it comes to the need for lay Catholics to understand the Church's position on any number of doctrinal issues. Likewise, we need bishops who will lead warmly and amicably, yet likewise accurately and as dutiful spiritual fathers. The goal of this book is to invite the Catholic laity (along with anyone of good will) to become steadily familiar with the teachings of the Church as transmitted by the writings of modern Catholic bishops. There is a particular focus on the bishops of the English-speaking world, as well as on the writings of the bishops over the course of the last two centuries. If you would like to grow in your Catholic faith, this book explains how the bishops have patiently and pastorally led the faithful to walk ever closer to the ultimate Good Shepherd: the Lord Jesus Christ. ""A terrific and vital book! Justin McClain presents the teachings of the Catholic bishops in stunning fashion. Every earnest reader will be equipped to follow Jesus, and lead others to do the same."" --Shaun McAfee, OP, author of Filling Our Father's House ""McClain has done it again! As a theologian and Catholic school teacher, Justin's love for the Church, graceful writing, and his ability to tell the story informs, inspires, and calls the Catholic laity to deepen our understanding, respect, and gratitude for the work of the shepherds of the Church: Catholic bishops. Through an exploration of a variety of important doctrinal themes, Justin sheds light on the courageous and heroic leadership that Catholic bishops have provided for the past two thousand years."" --Marco J. Clark, President/CEO, Bishop McNamara High School, Forestville, Maryland ""Our Bishops, Heroes for the New Evangelization is the fruit of intrigue with the idea that bishops are part of a continuous line of shepherds extending all the way back to Jesus' apostles. . . . All who wish to understand, through the eyes of Christ's shepherds, the roles that Christians are to play will be grateful for the guidance provided by Justin McClain's readable, insightful, and inspiring survey."" --Gregory Glazov, Professor of Biblical Studies, Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology, Seton Hall University ""An excellent exposition of various Catholic bishops' wisdom on diverse topics from ecology to sacred tradition to marriage. This work is much needed for regaining the sense of the office of the bishop as the source of unity for the church, especially through the bishop's teaching authority. I encourage everyone to give it a read today and discover why bishops are truly heroes for our generation!"" --Daniel Meola, Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, Washington, DC Justin McClain has taught theology and Spanish at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland, since 2006. In addition to this book, he has written on theology, philosophy, history, and current events for such outlets as Aleteia, Ave Maria Press, Catholic Exchange, the University of Notre Dame's journal Church Life, EpicPew, Human Life Review, and Our Sunday Visitor. Justin lives in Bowie, Maryland, with his wife and their four children, and they attend Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
